New-car sales continued to accelerate in New Zealand with the best February result in three decades, while commercial-vehicle deliveries were the highest-ever.

Motor Industry Assn. CEO David Crawford says the momentum from January flowed into February with light-vehicle sales up 8% year-on-year to 9,877 units, a plateau last reached in 1984.

New-car sales totaled 7,056 units and CV deliveries, 2,821.

“(For) passenger and commercial registrations it was the strongest February on record for new commercial-vehicle registrations and the strongest February since 1989 for new passenger vehicles,” Crawford says in a statement.

The result raised year-to-date sales to 21,530 units, up 10% from like-2014.

Toyota continued as overall market leader in February with 1,552 sales for a 16% market share. Ford followed with 977 units, ahead of GM Holden with 971.

Toyota led the car segment with 905 deliveries, followed by GM Holden (765) and Hyundai (694). The Toyota Corolla was the month’s top-selling car with 302 units, ahead of the Mazda CX-5 (210) and Mazda3 (206).

Toyota took 23% of the CV market in February with 647 units, while Ford notched 463 and Nissan 266. The Toyota Hilux was the month’s top-selling CV model (427), followed by the Ford Ranger (381) and Nissan Navara (266).
