New Zealand LV Sales Open 2014 at Best-Ever Rate
The new-car segment had its best January since the industry started keeping count in 1975, while the CV result was the best since tracking began in 1981.
New Zealand’s new-vehicle market roared into 2014, with January sales climbing 13.3% year-over-year to a record 10,528 units.
The Motor Industry Assn. reports new-car deliveries jumped 12.3% to 8,293 units, while commercial-vehicle traffic out of the showrooms improved 17.1% to 2,235.
“2014 registrations of new vehicles have got off to a rip-roaring start with the strongest January total since the MIA started collecting records for passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and total vehicles,” association CEO David Crawford says in a statement.
The new-car segment had its best January since the MIA started keeping count in 1975, while the CV result was the best since the group began tabulating that segment’s sales in 1981.
“It’s the fourth month in a row that records have been the highest since records began, fueled by a strong New Zealand dollar and a strong economy,” Crawford says.
Toyota continued its market domination, delivering 1,830 units for a 17.4% market share, well ahead of Ford with 1,193 (11.3%) and GM Holden with 1,032 (9.8%).
The Toyota Corolla remained the top-selling car with 722 deliveries for a 9% market share, ahead of the Ford Focus on 301 units (4%) and Suzuki Swift with 261 (3%). The Volkswagen Golf (230 units) and Toyota Yaris (226) followed.
The Ford Ranger was the leading CV with 314 deliveries (14%), edging out the Nissan Navara with 291 (13%). The Toyota Hilux followed with 231 units (10%).
MIA says SUVs accounted for 27% of January deliveries, small cars 26% and pickups/chassis-cabs 14%.
