New Zealand New-Car Sales Surge 35% in October
An industry official says new-vehicle deliveries are on track to return to levels seen before the global financial crisis.
New Zealand’s new-car market continues to build, with October sales up 35% year-on-year to 7,336 units as the industry records its second-strongest month of the year.
The Motor Industry Assn. says the latest result drove the 10-month total up 21.2% to 64,285 units.
Commercial-vehicle sales jumped 28.4% for the month to 2,052 units, leaving the segment up 13.4% through October to 20,178 units.
MIA CEO Perry Kerr says the local and global industry has faced its fair share of challenges over the past three years, all of which have affected sales.
“We have now climbed out of the hole and are back on a firm footing and will be very close to, if not breaking, the 100,000-unit mark for new-vehicle sales, putting us back to the levels we saw prior to the global financial crisis,” Kerr says in a statement.
Toyota remained atop the New Zealand passenger-car market in October, selling 1,862 units for 25.4% of the segment. Ford followed with 928, ahead of GM Holden with 720.
After 10 months, Toyota has sold 17,150 units, well ahead of Ford (9,594) and Holden (8,009).
The commercial-vehicle segment saw Toyota rank as the top seller in October, with 585 units, ahead of Ford (261) and Nissan (227). Toyota has 5,550 deliveries year-to-date, followed by Ford (3,071) and Nissan (2,263).
The Toyota Corolla was the top-selling model last month with 846 units, more than the second-place Ford Focus (344) and third-place Toyota Hilux (334) combined.
Hilux deliveries have totaled 3,512 units so far this year, outpacing the Ford Ranger (2,499) and Nissan Navara (2,161).
