Enthusiasts who have clamored for Mitsubishi Motors Corp. to bring its high-performance, rally car-inspired Lancer Evolution to the U.S. market need clamor no longer.

The '03 Lancer Evolution went on sale early last month, complete with Corvette performance and the most outlandish factory rear wing in the business.

The 271-hp, all-wheel drive Evo gets to 60 mph in five seconds and will do 155 mph for, get this — the bargain price of $29,987.

During a recent Evo test drive, a Ward's editor stopped at a metro Detroit sub shop, and the car instantly attracted a crowd of 20-something gearheads. Rally rival Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. soon answers with the 300-hp Subaru Impreza WRX STi.
