Ford says its new Pro Trailer Backup Assist system, available on the ’16 F-150 pickup, is a segment-first technology that makes the challenge of backing up a trailer easier.

Rather than turn the truck’s front wheels the opposite direction the driver wants the trailer to go, the system allows the trailer to be maneuvered with the twist of a knob, while the truck automatically steers its wheels and limits vehicle speed.

Ford says the system lessens the time required to back up a trailer and improves confidence. Leveraging advanced camera technology, Ford engineers developed Pro Trailer Backup Assist in conjunction with supplier partner Magna and tested it for almost a decade, securing five patents for the technology along the way.
