Ford Motor Co. ZAO today says it will cease production for a month at its St. Petersburg, Russia, plant due to the global economic crisis.
The plant, located in Vsevolozhsk, a small town some 15 miles (24 km) east of St. Petersburg, builds the Ford Focus C-car in four body styles: 3-, 4- and 5-door models, plus a wagon, and recently added the Mondeo sedan.
“The Ford production line in Vsevolozhsk will halt from Dec. 24 until Jan. 21 due to the New Year’s holidays and the need to reduce the production volumes,” Ford says in a statement. “The group took its decision to temporarily reduce the Russian production volumes at Ford due to the market situation and the lower sales in the car industry in general.”
The plant typically shuts down for the holidays from Jan. 1-10.
In line with Russian law, Ford’s 2,200 workers at the plant will be paid two-thirds of their salary during the down time.
