After several years of talking about it, 2001 finally brings the long-discussed "baby Jag" to the British automaker's range of vehicles. Due to be launched at the Geneva auto show in the spring, the vehicle will be added to the ranks later that year.

Built at the rehabilitated Ford Motor Co. Halewood, U.K., plant, the vehicle is codenamed X400, but rumors say it will bear the T-Type name. Experts say there will be a coupe, sedan and station wagon, all based on Ford's new European Mondeo platform. Additionally, expect all-wheel-drive, say insiders.

For model year 2001, Jag adds the XKR Silverstone with 20-in. (50 cm) wheels and Brembo brakes. Additionally, the XJ series will get a minor facelift.

If the new "baby" makes its mark like the S-Type, Jag dealers can book that Caribbean vacation. The XK8 still is one the best-looking cars on the road, but geez, the XJ line is long-in-the-tooth.
