General Motors makes another round of investments in its U.S. operations today, earmarking $130 million to build a global data command center at its Warren, MI, technical center.

Renovation and construction of the data center already is under way and scheduled for completion in 2015, making the suburban Detroit tech center a hub for monitoring the auto maker’s digital work.

GM says a modular design for the U.S. unit will enable future expansion, as the auto maker works to keep pace with industry advancements in computer-aided vehicle design and engineering.

GM also says it expects consolidation of its information technology infrastructure will reduce overall operating costs and result in the hiring of 25 people.

The investment is part of a broader $2 billion outlay the auto maker has begun at 17 facilities in eight states.

Since emerging from bankruptcy in 2009, GM has invested some $3.4 billion in the U.S.
