General Motors Corp.'s effort to re-energize its midsize portfolio includes plans for a Saturn sport wagon that likely would be built at GM's Wilmington, DE, assembly plant. If approved, the Saturn wagon, based on GM's Epsilon platform, would save the factory from the threat of closing. Opened in 1947, Wilmington currently builds the slow-selling Saturn L-Series and operates only one shift.
About half of Wilmington's 200,000-unit annual capacity is utilized presently. GM has given no formal indication it plans to close the plant.
