Global Mobile Alert Technology Aims to Prevent Driver Distraction
Global Mobile Alert’s Driver Distraction Alert app is an example of the software developer’s technology designed to improve safety by reducing distractions from gadgets and other activities done while driving.

Global Mobile Alert’s Driver Distraction Alert system comprises an RSU processor (AI-500-085) that interfaces with the traffic signal controller to receive Signal Phase and Timing (SpaT) messages that help drivers operate their vehicle more safely. The RSU processor transmits messages via the cellular network to the Global Mobile Alert Server. The driver receives information via an application in their vehicle either directly over the cellular network or connected via Bluetooth. The system activates at Traffic lights, School zones and Railroad crossings while on a hands-free voice call.
Here’s a video showing how it works: Driver Distraction Alert technology (Video). New features will have a Countdown to Green voice warning, shown here in this video: DDA's Countdown to Green (Video). The new Driver Distraction Alert system is available through Google Automotive Services (GAS), a collection of applications and services that Automotive OEMs can license and integrate into their in-vehicle infotainment systems.
GAS enables third-party developers to deliver Android applications to meet specific customer needs. Several major OEMs either are or have announced plans to use Android Automotive as part of their onboard infotainment systems. "GMA has a really interesting product here that can potentially save lives. In combination with some of WirelessCar’s products, I see a lot of use cases in the solution area of advanced safety and security.” Daniel Fredriksson, Head of Business Development at WirelessCar. In today's crowded driving space, distraction is a growing threat. GMA‘s Driver Distraction Alert technology is state of the art and can start saving lives today. “I have worked with and advised Global Mobile Alert on this groundbreaking driver distraction reduction technology Driver Distraction Alert (DDA),” says Peter Goelz, a 30-year safety professional and former managing director of the National Transportation Safety Board in Washington DC. With DDA the driver receives alerts at approaching traffic lights, railroad crossings and school zones for potential accident hot zones while talking on a hands-free voice call.
“I applaud Demetrius (Thompson, president and founder of Global Mobile Alert) and his team for his innovation and Global Mobile Alert’s commitment to bringing this important safety innovation to market. The technology is so necessary for today’s world.” C. Green, a Product Engineer formerly at Uber/deCarta who helped develop the first-generation map databases shared that, “Global Mobile Alert has test-driven the most recent versions of the software on the UC Berkeley testbed SPADATS wireless traffic signal test corridor in the Silicon Valley. He reports that a "Countdown to Green" advisory while stopped at red lights on the test course worked well.
The standard traffic light intersection, school zone and rail crossing alert functionality was available all throughout the Bay Area where he drove. The background map integrated well with the alert icons, and the system alerted him of approaching traffic light-controlled intersections while he was talking hand-free on his smartphone. DDA's Countdown to Green demo video Global Mobile Alert has software for wirelessly communicating the signal phase and timing of a light, which is the type of applications that is envisioned in connected car and OEM industry today.

"Sooner or later car makers will leverage contextual information to mitigate and prevent distracted driving in connection with smartphones use once and for all. This is the solution that Global Mobile Alert offers," Thompson says.
