DETROIT – Mini touts its latest hardtop model, based on a new platform pulled and stretched in every direction, at the North American International Auto Show here.

It is the third generation of the modern Mini Cooper, first introduced in the U.S. 12 years ago.

The new Mini is almost 4 in. (102 mm) longer, 1.7 in. (43 mm) wider and 0.3 in. (7.6 mm) higher than its predecessor. The car appears considerably larger and has a longer hood and nose than previous versions.

The larger dimensions provide a roomier interior front and back and 30% more cargo space. The interior also has more-refined materials, gauges and is loaded with technology, including an available head-up display, rearview camera and advanced connectivity technology.

There’s also news under the hood. The base Hardtop model is powered by a 1.5L 3-cyl. BMW engine that makes 134 hp. The sportier Cooper S model runs on a 2.0L 4-cyl. that makes 189 hp.

In 2013, Mini delivered 305,000 cars globally, mostly through strong gains in Asia and the Americas. In the U.S., Mini’s largest market, the brand achieved its best-ever sales with more than 66,000 units. The 500,000th Mini sold in the U.S. was delivered last year.
