November marked the ninth consecutive month of year-over-year gains for Canadian truck makers, delivering 3,544 units, up an impressive 25.2%. Regardless of the small dips seen early in the year, the gap in year-to-date sales continued to widen, growing to 15.9% to 37,837 units.
Sales in Class 8 soared 28.8% to 2,445 units last month. Volvo Truck was the only truck maker to come in under, with Mack and Volvo dipping 0.8% and 20.2%, respectively. Volume leader Daimler outperformed with large gains by Freightliner (+44.2%) and Western Star (+15.7%). Six straight months of year-over-year gains left Class 8 year-to-date sales comfortably 11.7% ahead of 2016 with 23,591 deliveries.
Medium-duty truck sales continued to thrive, rising 18.0% to 1,099 units in November with gains in most classes.
Sales in Class 7 rose 8.3% but on mixed results. Peterbilt plummeted 18.4% while sister brand Kenworth spiked 31.1%, resulting in an 8.4% increase for PACCAR. Gains were seen from Freightliner (+55.9%) and Hino (+15.4%).
Class 6 was the only class to drop in November, down 12.6% to 83 units. Despite the drop in sales, Class 6 still was 17.7% ahead for the year with 1,195 deliveries.
With a 57.6% increase by Ford on 331 deliveries, Class 5 rose 33.7% to 575 units in November, the best-performing class for the month. Hino (+30.8%) and FCA (+2.5%) also posted gains. International and Daimler came in under, both dropping 33.3%.
Class 4 climbed 9.7% to 113 units with a large increase of 62.5% in its import line. Ford led the way with a 13.5% rise in sales to 84 units, with a market share of 74.3%.
