Ssangyong Union Officials Get Jail Time
One union member receives an 18-month prison term for damages to the Ssangyong plant totaling more than $2 million.
Two members of the Ssangyong Motor Co. Ltd. labor union reportedly will do prison time for their roles in the fiery 2-month strike at the auto maker’s assembly plant in Pyongtaek, South Korea.
Korean press reports indicate a mid-level union official was sentenced today to 18 months in prison on charges his actions resulted in 2.29 billion won ($2 million) in general damages, with specific liability for destroying furniture valued at 10 million won ($8,600).
A second union member was sentenced to a 1-year prison term, which was suspended. He was convicted on similar charges.
The 77-day occupation of the Pyongtaek plant by dissident workers totally shut down the plant in June and July.
A National Police Agency report made public Thursday indicates police used 555 gallons (2,100 L) of tear gas to try to bring rioting strikers under control and evict them from the plant property.
