VIENNA – Renault and Turkish vehicle maker Karsan Otomotiv are considering production of Dacia Dokker multipurpose vehicles at Karsan’s Akcalar plant in Bursa, Turkey.

According to a letter of intent signed by Renault and Karsan, the auto makers are evaluating the feasibility of developing and manufacturing derivative models of the MPV.

They plan to decide in April whether a final agreement will be signed.

If the negotiations are successful, the start of production is expected for 2014. Plans call for annual output of up to 20,000 Dokkers at Karsan.

Renault unveiled the Dokker last year. As with other Dacia models, the MPV is based on Renault’s low-cost B0 platform.

The Dokker is manufactured at Renault’s plant in Tangier, Morocco. In Bursa, the French auto maker operates the Oyak Renault joint-venture facility that manufactures cars, engines and transmissions.

Karsan manufactures previous-generation Citroen Berlingo and Peugeot Partner vans as well as the Karsan J10 small bus, which is based on an older Peugeot model. The auto maker also builds Hyundai and Renault trucks.

In 2011, Karsan was one of three finalists in New York's “Taxi of Tomorrow” contest to supply taxicabs to the city.
