Twelve Consecutive Months of Gains for Canadian Truck Makers

Canada big-truck makers delivered 3,070 units in February, up 17.6% compared to like-2017’s 2,610 with the same number of selling days and marking the 12th month in a row of year-over-year gains.

Class 8 sales grew 27.0% to 1,862 units. Mack was the only truck maker to see a decline, down 26.9%. Sister brand Volvo had a better month, up 48.2%, resulting in parent company Volvo Truck 18.4% ahead. Segment leader Freightliner rose 7.2% and accounted for a 28.0% market share. Kenworth’s sales soared 72.4% to 350 units, the greatest improvement in the group, and increased five percentage points in market share.

Two strong months put Class 8 sales 28.9% ahead of 2017 totaling 3,665.

Medium-duty sales in February jumped 5.6% to 1,208 units from 1,144 year-ago, driven up by a double-digit boost in Class 7.

Segment leader International soared 102.9% from 104 to 211 units, boosting Class 7 sales 33.7% to 444. PACCAR’s deliveries tumbled 15.8%, as combined sales of its Peterbilt (-34.1%) and Kenworth (+5.7%) lines totaled 64 units compared with 76 in like-2017. Ford plummeted 86.7%, but on small volume.

Class 6 sales dived as large losses were posted by most truck makers including leaders International (-15.2%) and Hino (-27.8%).

Class 5 deliveries grew 4.4% to 544 units from 521 in the same period last year. Isuzu witnessed the widest year-over-year disparity on a volume basis, with deliveries up 106.3% to 99 from 48. FCA and Ford sales fell 10.4% and 10.2%, respectively, and Hino demand was up 23.0% to 75 from 61.

Class 4 sales ebbed 28.7% to 107 units from 150 year-ago. Despite a 42.5% flop in sales, Ford remained No.1 with a 68.2% market share. Isuzu’s combined sales of 29 accounted for a 27.1% market share, up from 11.3% year-ago.
