A car that boasts best-in-class driving dynamics should have an interior to match, and the ’16 Chevrolet Camaro nails that elusive combination with a sporty, high-tech cabin that hugs your haunches like it hugs the road.

The 2016 Wards 10 Best Interiors winner impresses judges with an uncannily good seating position, where the sport coupe’s shifter feels like an extension of your hand and a chunky, flat-bottom steering wheel fits as naturally under your knuckles as a pistol grip.

“Fits like a glove,” marvels one WardsAuto editor.

The seats themselves are both functional and comfortable. They snugly wrap thighs and body sides to safely whip around the racetrack, but also contain enough cushion to make road trips less taxing on the toches. They serve as a designer’s canvas, too. Our $46,000 2SS tester featured a sporty, perforated ceramic white-and-black color combination with white accent stitching.

The same stitching graces the dash, steering wheel, center console, door panels and shifter boot. Bright red metallic caps the shifter, and owners can select from 24 LED ambient lighting choices.

Classy-looking brushed-metal-like trim circles the Camaro’s classic, dual-binnacle IP, as well as the steering-wheel controls, HVAC vents and shifter bezel.

“Love the black and white leather with white contrast stitching, as well as brushed metallic trim,” one judge observes. “Silver and red metallic top of shifter is striking, perhaps the highlight of the interior.”

GM cleverly integrates the HVAC controls into the central vents, while the 8-in. (20-cm) color touchscreen atop the center stack is brightly lit with big icons and is easy to navigate. The touchscreen also is the gateway to lots of useful technology, such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, vehicle performance data and infotainment.

“Great stuff, all visible,” a judge says. “Bonus points for a G-meter!”

The award is another feather in the Camaro’s cap, but sports-coupe enthusiasts are the real winners because they’re finally getting interiors on par with their powertrains.
