Fiat, Jeep Opening Doors to More ICE Powertrains
Stellantis siblings react to slowdown in BEV sales in Europe and the U.S. with a greater focus on ICE and hybrid powertrains.
Fiat plans a new multi-powertrain strategy as sibling Stellantis’ brand Jeep unveils the first renderings of a new mild-hybrid model.
Stellantis appears to be reacting to the slowdown in sales of battery-electric vehicles in Europe and the U.S. It joins Mercedes-Benz which committed to continued internal-combustion-engine research and development well into the 2030s, according to its 2023 financial statement.
Fiat will offer electric, hybrid and ICE powertrains to cover maximum market penetration in global markets, the company says. The first vehicle in this new family will be presented in July, followed by the launch of a new model every year for the following three years.
The automaker has released a YouTube video showing four potential concepts including a city car described as a “Mega-Panda” to build on the success of its popular micro SUV, the Panda.
Other concepts include a pickup (pictured, below) drawing on its success in the South American market with trucks but extending into other markets including Europe. Also planned are a fastback hatchback and a fullsize SUV or “Giga-Panda”.
Brand CEO Olivier Francois says: “We are in a global game and our next step will be to transition from local products to a global offer that can benefit all of our customers everywhere in the world.”
Meanwhile, Jeep’s new Avenger 4xe variant will offer both front-wheel- and all-wheel-drive options. Its 4x4 powertrain couples a 136-hp gasoline internal-combustion engine with 21-kW electric motors driving each axle.
Its 48V mild-hybrid system allows driving in electric mode at low speeds thanks to the combination of the automatic 6-speed e-DCS6 dual-clutch transmission and its integrated electric motor.
