VIENNA – Toyota Motor Mfg. Poland will discontinue the third shift of production for 1.0L 3-cyl. gasoline engines and 5-speed transmissions at its plant in Walbrzych beginning in May.

The move results from last week’s announced plan to cut output at the ToyotaPeugeot Citroen Automobile Czech car factory in Kolin. The Czech plant, which builds Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1 small cars, is TMMP’s largest customer.

TMMP used to ship more than 70% of output to TPCA. The engines and 5-speed gearboxes also are exported to Toyota Motor Mfg. France for installation in the Toyota Yaris.

The Walbrzych plant will idle some 200 workers with time-limited contracts as a result of the production cuts.

Some workers who belong to TMMP’s basic staff of about 1,700 employees with permanent contracts will be moved to other jobs within the company. They will be used mainly to explore ways to make the plant more flexible.

Not affected is production of 6-speed transmissions, which continues on two shifts at the TMMP plant.

The Walbrzych facility manufactured 314,271 engines and 507,205 transmissions last year.
