Auto engineers rank safety as a big challenge to stay competitive in the design of the next generation of vehicles, according to a DuPont survey.
Advanced safety and entertainment systems virtually tied as the top technologies consumers would be willing to pay for in their next vehicles.
DuPont “on the near-term horizon” foresees enhanced side-impact and anti-rollover electronic stability systems as well as pedestrian-friendly bumpers.
Also in the future, according to DuPont are:
Knee and rear airbag systems
Active seatbelt pre-tensioning systems with retractor mechanisms, buckles and electric motor components
Side-door reinforcement and impact absorbers for crash compatibility between small and large vehicles
Laminated safety glass improvements that could reduce 10,000 occupant- ejection fatalities a year in the U.S
Heads-up display systems with cleaner, sharper images for showing increasingly critical driver information such as turn-by-turn navigation and collision avoidance warnings.
