Skoda names Australian Michael Irmer to lead the Volkswagen subsidiary in his native country.

Irmer takes over March 1 at Skoda Australia after serving most recently at VW’s Wolfsburg, Germany, headquarters, where he was responsible for product and price planning for China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations markets.

He held senior positions with Volkswagen Australia from 2004 until 2009 as both financial controller and dealer development manager.

VW Group Australia Managing Director Anke Koeckler says with a longstanding career at the auto maker, Irmer possesses extensive knowledge of both the Australian and global automotive markets and is well-positioned to lead the Skoda brand to a successful 2013. The Czech-built cars claimed only a 0.3% share of the Australian market in 2012.

Irmer “will provide the Skoda brand with the focus and strategic direction to succeed in a very competitive market,” Koeckler says in a statement.
