Toyota Australia becomes the country’s first auto maker to export more than 1 million vehicles, 26 years after it launched overseas shipments.

The company says its 1 millionth export vehicle was shipped to the Middle East earlier this month.

Toyota Australia began exports to New Zealand in 1986 and 10 years later expanded to the Middle East. It now ships vehicles to Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen in addition to the South Pacific islands.

Chris Harrod, executive director-Toyota Australia Mfg., says the 1 million-unit mark demonstrates the auto maker’s ability to build cars that suit the needs not only of local customers but also those in export markets.

“Enormous effort has gone into ensuring our cars can withstand extreme temperatures and tough terrain,” he says in a statement. “The Australian-built Camry and Aurion are trusted brands in our export markets.”

Toyota Australia shipped 59,943 Camry and Aurion cars in 2011 and another 42,142 units in the first six months of this year.

“Although the automotive industry is facing challenges in Australia, it is important that we continue to focus on our export program and explore new export opportunities as part of our overall business strategy,” Harrod says.
