Stellantis joint brands Vauxhall/Opel release the first images and details of the return of the Frontera compact SUV model with a full battery-electric vehicle version from launch.
However, in recognition of a slowdown in demand from European consumers for BEVs, the automaker promises a range of variants including internal-combustion engines with 48-volt hybrid technology.
Salient details we are told include interior passenger and luggage space of more than 16.24 cu.-ft. (460 L) of cargo space in the trunk with the rear seats in the up position. With them folded down, capacity increases to up to 56.5 cu.-ft. (1,600 L). Additional versatility is provided by the 60:40 split of the rear bench while a second load floor comes as standard. For customers who need more cargo space there are optional roof rails with a load capacity of more than 440 lbs. (200 kg).
Interior features published so far include a fully digital Pure Panel cockpit with two 10-in. (25.4-cm) displays and multimedia infotainment system. An Intelli-Seat feature in the front seats uses a slot that relieves pressure on the coccyx, or tailbone, to promote comfort during long journeys.
There’s also a cooled wireless charger and two USB ports available in the front and two more USB ports available in the second row. Larger devices that would normally not fit into the cabin properly, such as tablets, can be stored in the center console thanks to a flexible strap that holds them in place. Second-row passengers get integrated smartphone pockets in the backrests of the front seats.
While the original Frontera was a rebadged Isuzu and marketed as the Amigo and Rodeo in the U.S., the new Frontera is unlikely to reach North America this time around with the Jeep brand covering the market for Stellantis. The BEV version is set to hit the European markets by the end of 2024.
