The Kia EV9 GT-Line stands out as a bold statement in the battery-electric SUV market, blending cutting-edge technology with a design that captures attention. However, it's the propulsion system performance that truly defines the experience behind the wheel of this flagship BEV.

For that reason, the Kia EV9 GT-Line is honored with a spot on the 2024 Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems list.

The 3-row EV9 GT-Line is powered by a dual-motor setup that delivers a combined output of 379 hp and a terrific 516 lb.-ft. (700 Nm) of torque, giving it the punch needed for confident acceleration. The instant torque, a hallmark of electric vehicles, propels the EV9 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in just under six seconds, impressive for an SUV of its size and weight.

This immediate power delivery is particularly noticeable during city driving, where the EV9 effortlessly surges forward at traffic lights, and on highways where it gets up to speed and merges into traffic with ease.

The EV9 is the second Kia model based on Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP platform, following the EV6. As a state-of-today’s-art BEV, it offers every current technical feature and is the first to feature fourth-generation battery technology for improved energy density.

Its standard 800V electrical architecture enables “ultrafast” charging capable of boosting its 99.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack from 10% to 80% full in less than 25 minutes on a high-speed DC outlet.

Rated at 270 miles (435 km) of range and 80 mpg-e, the EV9 posts strong efficiency for its mass, with our judges averaging 3.0 miles (4.8 km) per kWh and once as high as 3.3 miles (5.3 km) per kWh. That translates directly into covering more miles than observed range used.

Despite its size, the EV9 GT-Line feels surprisingly nimble. The all-wheel-drive system adds to driving confidence, ensuring that power is distributed efficiently, especially in less-than-ideal road conditions.

“This car rocks in performance mode, but you don’t really need to put it there. Normal gives you plenty and is a blast to drive,” said judge David Zoia. “The performance is even more notable given this is a 3-row vehicle.”

The regenerative braking system is well-tuned, offering multiple levels of strength that can be adjusted to suit the driver’s preference. The highest setting allows for one-pedal driving, which, after a short adjustment period, becomes intuitive and enhances the overall driving experience.

The Kia EV9 GT-Line propulsion system excels in delivering a driving experience that is both exhilarating and refined. It combines the instant power and smooth delivery typical of an electric vehicle, along with the comfort and convenience expected from a premium SUV. For those looking for a versatile electric SUV that doesn’t compromise on performance, the EV9 GT-Line is a top contender against all comers.
