Fifth Gen VW Golf Uncovered

Volkswagen AG debuts the first photos of its new, fifth-generation Golf, revealing styling that stays true to traditional Golf form.

With more than 22 million Golfs sold since the car's debut 30 years ago, VW has made significant changes.

Overall dimensions of the newest version, which comes with two or four doors, have increased in all directions. The front fascia was developed for improved aerodynamics, and features twin circular headlamps, with horizontal front turn signals adapted in a Phaeton-style setup.

Above the headlights, the side panels rise in a pronounced curve and blend into the hood, emphasizing a V-shaped appearance.

The powertrain lineup includes VW's signature TDI diesel engines, as well as four gasoline-powered engines. VW will offer either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed direct-shift gearbox on the new Golf.

The new Golf will make its debut at the Frankfurt auto show in September, with vehicle sales following in Europe in late 2003. U.S. sales are expected to begin in first-quarter 2004.
