Just in time for Easter, Volkswagen of America Inc. announces the return of the Rabbit at the New York International Auto Show.

Volkwagen’s all-new fifth-generation Golf, which debuted at the 2006 Chicago Auto Show, will be known as the Rabbit when it arrives in North American showrooms this summer.

The name change is designed to reconnect with the U.S. and Canadian markets, the auto maker says.

“Volkswagen customers want a relationship with their cars,” says Kerri Martin, director of brand innovation.

The Rabbit nameplate, which was prolific in North America from 1974 to 1984, will be exclusive to the U.S. and Canada.

The Rabbit goes on sale this summer in 2- and 4-door versions, starting at $14,990 for the two-door.
