Volkswagen Unleashes Fastest-Ever Tiguan Compact CUV

Shoehorning its 2.0L, 240-hp twin-turbo diesel, so far seen in the Passat and Passat Alltrack, into the souped-up Tiguan allows it to sprint from 0-62 mph in 6.5 seconds, aided by VW’s standard 4MOTION AWD system.

LONDON – Keeping pace with the continuing demand for “hot” CUVs, Volkswagen brings its fastest Tiguan yet to the U.K. market.

Shoe-horning its 2.0L, 240-hp twin-turbo diesel, so far seen in the Passat and Passat Alltrack, allows the compact CUV to sprint from 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in just 6.5 seconds, thanks to grip from VW’s standard 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system.

Top speed is 142 mph (229 km/h).

Dubbed the 2.0 BiTDI, it offers an increase of 30 hp over the previous most-powerful Tiguan, the 2.0 TSI.

Applying an AdBlue emissions system, the Tiguan reduces nitrogen-oxide emissions while its stop/start and battery-regeneration systems help restrict carbon-dioxide emissions to a claimed 268 g/mile (167 g/km) and achieve fuel economy of 36.7 mpg (6.4 L/100 km).

And, for customers still wary of VW diesel engines, there’s a new gasoline option: the 2.0 TSI 180PS, available with a 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic transmission. It, too, is offered as standard with 4MOTION and delivers a top speed of 129 mph (208 km/h), 0-62 mph time of 7.7 seconds and CO₂ emissions of 273 g/mile (170 g/km).

Both new Tiguan engines are offered with range-topping SEL or R-Line trims.

The Tiguan SEL’s standard features include VW’s Discover Navigation infotainment and satellite navigation system, which includes an 8-in. (20-cm) color touchscreen, adaptive cruise control and a 12.3-in. (31.2-cm) high-resolution screen in the instrument cluster replacing conventional analog instruments.

R-Line specifications include a roof spoiler joined by a rear diffuser and front-air intake, Suzuka 20-in. alloy wheels and a unique bumper design. Inside are R-Line sill protectors, carpet mats and bespoke cloth seats using “San Remo” microfiber, while the front seats also feature the R-Line logo on the headrest.  Stainless steel pedals and a black roof lining complete the look.

U.K. prices for the Tiguan SEL 2.0L TSI 180-hp 6-speed manual start from £31,170 ($38,761) while the SEL 2.0 BiTDI 240-hp 7-speed starts at £37,200 ($46,262).
