Volkswagen of America Inc. will pay $1.1 million for violating the U.S. Clean Air Act.
The civil penalty, the largest ever assessed, resulted from VW's failure to promptly notify and correct a defective oxygen sensor in more than 326,000 '99, '00 and '01 Golfs, Jettas and New Beetles.
VW completed a voluntary recall of the affected vehicles at a cost of more than $26 million.
