Volkswagen's Midsize Tayron Launches With Full ICE Powertrain Options

Volkswagen launches mild hybrid with plug-in hybrid claiming 62-mile all-electric range to follow.

Gas, diesel, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain choices for the new Volkswagen Tayron SUV.

Volkswagen launches a new midsize SUV to sit between its compact Tiguan and fullsize Touareg with the 7-seat Tayron offering a full suite of internal-combustion-engine powertrain options to suit multiple markets.

It will boast gasoline, diesel, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions with the latter claiming a 62-mile (100-km) all-electric driving range.

At launch, the model will be first offered with mild-hybrid drive in the form of the gasoline-fueled eTSI. Later there will be two eHybrid plug-in hybrid drives, two TSI turbocharged gasoline engines and two TDI turbocharged diesel engines.

All drivetrains are coupled to an automatic dual-clutch gearbox. The entry-level eTSI engine, assisted by a 48V mild-hybrid system, produces 148 hp. Plug-in hybrid powertrains will come with a choice of two system outputs of 201 hp and 268 hp.

Their 19.7-kWh batteries can be charged with up to 11 kW at an AC wallbox or AC charging station and with up to 50 kW at DC quick-charging stations.

The largest diesel option claims 190 hp and is paired with VW's 4Motion all-wheel drive as standard. All Tayron 4X4 models are designed for maximum trailer weights of up to 5,500 lbs. (2,500 kg) braked on up to a 12% gradient.

VW’s Trailer Assist system comes as standard in conjunction with a folding towing bracket to make maneuvering easier.

Tayron boasts an extensive standard equipment list. The entry-level Life version includes nine airbags, a three-zone automatic air conditioner, 10-color background lighting, a multifunctional driving experience control covering the driving and all-wheel-drive profiles, audio volume and activation of pre-programmed lighting and audio moods.

Additionally, there’s a 12.5-in. (32-cm) infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, digital instruments, LED headlights including automatic main beam control, 3D taillight clusters, sun blinds in the rear doors and 17-in. alloy wheels.

Options include IDA voice assistant with ChatGPT integration in conjunction with the optional Discover infotainment package; a tilting and sliding panoramic sunroof, a 700-watt Harman Kardon sound system; leather upholstery; electrically adjustable seats including massage and ventilation functions; and an electrically activated child safety lock for the rear.

All-wheel drive systems are available for the start of pre-sales. The entry-level version is the 148-hp eTSI in the Life trim level, which is available in Europe from €45,475 ($49,935).
