BMW is investing another $600 million to expand and improve its Spartanburg, SC, assembly plant by 2021, which will add 1,000 jobs and grow headcount to 11,000 employees. The North assembly hall, now dedicated to manufacturing X3 and X4, is being renovated to accommodate additional capacity for X5 and to retool the old X5 body shop. Over the past four years, BMW invested $1 billion to expand the South assembly hall for a new body shop in anticipation of X7 assembly later this year. The plant is the company’s biggest worldwide and makes the BMW X vehicles for the U.S. and global markets.
