Mitsubishi Motors North America Inc. releases sketches and information on the two vehicles it will be showing at next month’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit: the already-announced new Lancer compact car and a concept called Prototype X.

The future high-performance Lancer Evolution model, going on sale late next year, will be hinted at with the concept, Mitsubishi says, noting the Prototype X’s “high-performance engine, excellent dynamics and striking design will appeal to enthusiasts worldwide.”

Concept sketches reveal the same aggressive grille as the new ’08 Lancer but with performance-oriented hood scoops, large tires and a taller rear spoiler.

The ’08 Lancer will debut in early 2007 at U.S. Mitsubishi dealerships.

Both the production Lancer and concept car will be unveiled Jan. 8 at the Detroit show.
