Mitsubishi Ramping Up for Attrage Global Sedan Launch
The auto maker says the Attrage qualifies for eco-car tax breaks by achieving 51.1 mpg, exceeding the Thai government’s 47-mpg minimum.
Mitsubishi will launch production of the Attrage, its next-generation global compact sedan, in Thailand in June, with plans to build at least 100,000 units a year within five years.
Sales of the 4-door-sedan version of the auto maker’s Mirage hatchback will begin in Thailand in July before expanding to international markets.
Mitsubishi is investing TB5 billion ($168 million) in Thai production facilities.
The Attrage was previewed earlier this year as the G4 sedan concept at the Bangkok and Shanghai auto shows.
Mitsubishi says the Attrage, whose name combines “Mirage” with “attractive,” qualifies for the Thai government’s eco-car tax breaks. The car is expected to achieve 51.1 mpg (4.6 L/100 km), exceeding the eco-car requirement of at least 47 mpg (5.0 L/100 km). It also will meet Euro4 exhaust-gas regulations.
The Attrage’s body will be the lightest in its class due to the extensive use of high-tensile steel, Mitsubishi says. It will be powered by a compact 1.2L engine featuring the auto maker’s MIVEC variable-valve-timing technology mated to a continuously variable transmission or 5-speed manual.
The Attrage boasts a class-leading minimum turning radius of 190 ins. (480 cm), and its short nose is intended to deliver a sizeable forward field of view.
