BMW 3-Series Wagon, 130i to Bow at Frankfurt

BMW AG will present 18 world premieres at the Frankfurt auto show, including a new 3-Series wagon and top-of-the-line 1-Series, the 130i.

The Munich-based car maker also will introduce xDrive for the 3-Series, a new V-8 for the 5-Series sedan and 6-Series coupe and convertible, a more powerful diesel for the 745d and a new version of the X3 cross/utility.

In addition, BMW will show off its night vision and high-beam assist systems, plus roll out a new particulate filter for all of its diesels.

The 3-Series wagon will come with a choice of three gasoline and two diesel engines. It features more interior space for both occupants and cargo. This model, like the rest of the 3-Series lineup, will get BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

The auto maker also will introduce three new engines for the 3-Series sedan, including two 4-cyls. for the 318i and 318d. There also will be a more powerful 6-cyl. for the car.

The 1-Series gets a new top-end model called the 130i. It has a 3L straight-6 engine that generates 265 hp. Adaptive headlights and a telematics system also will be featured in this car. A particle filter will be available for all 1-Series models.

BMW extends its 5-Series with a V-8 equipped 550i. Also slated for the 5-Series are revised diesels for the 530xd and the 520d. All diesel-powered 5-Series models will feature the new particulate filter.

The 6-Series coupe and convertible now come with a new 4.8L V-8 that cranks out 367 hp. It accelerates from 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.4 seconds. The convertible is 0.3 seconds slower. Top speed for the new 650Ci that replaces the 645Ci is electronically limited to 160 mph (250 km/h). It is scheduled for fall introduction.

The extended-wheelbase 730Ld, designed to be chauffer-driven, gets a more powerful 5-cyl. diesel. The 745d also has a new diesel with 10% greater power (330 hp) than its predecessor.

A new X3 2.0i comes with a new 2L 4-cyl. gasoline engine. Meanwhile, the X3's 3L is improved to deliver more power and better fuel economy, BMW says.

The Mini One D gets a 1.4L diesel with 20% more power, generating 88 hp and producing fewer emissions. There also will be new Mini Seven, Mini Park Lane and Mini Checkmate models introduced at the show.
