BMW announces the i3 electric vehicle will be priced at $41,350 in the U.S. before state and federal incentives.
Powered by a hybrid-synchronous electric motor producing 170 hp and 184 lb.-ft. (249 Nm) of torque, the i3 has a range of 80-100 miles (128-160 km).
Designed as an EV from the ground up, the lightweight i3 boasts the first mass-produced carbon-fiber-reinforced passenger compartment based on an aluminum chassis. BMW says the i3 will offer interior space comparable to the 3-Series sedan, despite being shorter.
The EV can be charged through an optional DC fast-charger system, a home-charging unit supplied by BMW or at any public charging station that uses a Level 2 SAE J1772 system.
The i3 is scheduled to debut in U.S. showrooms in second-quarter 2014.
