Dear Editor:

I bought my father-in-law's Detroit dealership, Severs Cadillac, in the 1970s. Regarding Steve Finlay's column, “Dealerships Can Get Crazy,” in the September 2011 issue, we had many interesting people in those days, before the 8300 reporting form requiring information on cash purchases.

Customers would bring grocery bags full of cash to buy new cars. Our most memorable experience was a very nice old lady who sat in every car in the showroom and finally told our salesman which one she had decided on.

Tom asked her how she would like to handle the financial transaction. She kindly and quietly stated God was paying for the car. At this moment, her daughter arrived and took her home.
