Chrysler Unveils Airflow Concept BEV at CES 2022

Chrysler unveils the battery-electric Chrysler Airflow Concept at CES 2022 in Las Vegas and announces it will launch its first BEV in 2025. The Stellantis brand also says it will offer an all-electric vehicle lineup by 2028.

STLA Brain, a new electrical/electronic (E/E) and software architecture, is the backbone of the Airflow Concept user experience. This flexible architecture enables software developers to create and update features and services quickly, taking advantage of capabilities built into the cockpit without waiting for a new hardware launch.

Using a menu-based format, screens throughout the Airflow interior can be simplified and grouped based on individuals and interests. Information on the screens can be shared with all passengers by swiping. Each screen is a personalized space providing access to connected entertainment, apps and downloads. Each seat also features a built-in camera, enabling occupants to participate in a group video conference call from the Airflow cabin.

The Airflow Concept integrates advanced driver-assistance technology with intuitive AI and connected-vehicle technology that delivers 350 to 400 miles (564 to 644 km) of range and fast-charging functionality, Chrysler says. The all-wheel-drive BEV’s two 150-kW motors are located toward the front and rear, maximizing interior space.

“The Chrysler Airflow Concept represents the start of the brand’s journey toward a fully electrified future. It is the result of a thoughtful synthesis of the full arsenal of Stellantis’ connected vehicle technology – inside and out,” Ralph Gilles, chief design officer at Stellantis, says in a news release.

“The design features a decisively elegant aerodynamic exterior and a modern, sophisticated interior that takes the customer on a new level of digital delight.”

The Airflow Concept’s low ride height and streamlined, two-tone roofline (pictured below) achieves an elegant profile while increasing BEV range, Chrysler says.

Up front, the Airflow features a Chrysler Wing logo tied into a cross-car grille/light blade illuminated with crystal LED lighting. A crystal LED taillight running the full width of the vehicle accentuates the wide stance. The Airflow Concept features welcome, departure and animated lighting, including aqua lighting indicating the vehicle is charging.

Inside (pictured below) are soft leather-wrapped seats, while materials including vegetable-tanned leather as well as floor mats, fabric and carpeting made of recycled materials underscore a future of sustainable design, Chrysler says. Infotainment screens appear as gloss black sculptures. Seating rests on a pedestal base, allowing for maximum legroom, shoulder space and personal storage for each passenger.

Functional and ambient lighting helps create personalized space for the driver and passengers, while the Airflow Concept’s panoramic roof allows daylight to illuminate the cabin.
