Since Chrysler Group launched its PT Cruiser in 2000, the Auburn Hills auto maker has managed to spin 10 variants off the innovative hatchback.

The 11th edition is arriving in showrooms, as the '06 Street Cruiser Route 66 edition attempts to spark new interest in the affordable 4-door.

Chrysler unveiled the Route 66 edition in late August. “Solar yellow” was picked because of its hot-rod appeal and because Chrysler had never done such a boldly colored version of the PT, says Larry Lyons, vice president-Small Vehicle Product Team.

The Route 66 edition represents the first factory-customized version of the newly refined '06 PT Cruiser, now in production in Toluca, Mexico.

Lyons says the company expects to sell about 1,000 Route 66 editions this year.
