In a move intended to enhance used-car values, vehicle-history provider Carfax has expanded its partnership with AutoNation Inc., the nation's largest dealership chain.

Used-car shoppers will be given a Carfax vehicle-history report for any car they're considering at AutoNation's 269 stores. Free reports will be made available with all AutoNation online listings. Eligible vehicles will come with Carfax buy-back guarantees.

The companies say the expanded partnership will improve trade-in evaluations and enhance the value of units resold at AutoNation dealerships.

“Using vehicle history information to better evaluate trades and resell used vehicles has a positive effect on the used-car operations of dealers and helps build consumer confidence,” says Carfax President Dick Raines.

“We fully anticipate the impact of our new partnership on the resale value of vehicles sold at all AutoNation stores will be very positive,” says AutoNation President and Chief Operating Officer Mike Maroone. He says today's informed customers want vehicle backgrounds.

Carfax reports provide title histories and help identify problems, such as odometer fraud and flood damage.
