A new Australian electric charger debuts with a claim it can recharge an electric vehicle in the time it takes to drink a cup of coffee.

Developer Queensland-based Tritium says its device brings the future of EVs one step closer.

The Veefil allows drivers of standard passenger EVs to recharge their vehicles 20 times faster than with a standard wall socket. Users can select either a half-charge of about 10 minutes or a full charge of up to 30 minutes.

Tritium says the Veefil fast-electric charger has the smallest footprint in the world and can be installed almost anywhere. The charger is completely sealed from the elements to allow installation outside in places such as parking lots.

“The accessibility, capacity and simplicity of the Veefil means a network of publicly available charging infrastructure on highways and urban areas can be created, making driving an EV a viable option for busy people,” the company says in a statement.

The Veefil was developed locally as part of a A$2.3 million ($3.25 million) project funded with matching support of a Commercialization Australia grant.

Tritium says it anticipates that within the next four years one of every 100 vehicles manufactured will be electric, and they will require public fast-charge infrastructure to realize their full potential.

“The Veefil will play a significant part in building this global infrastructure,” it says.

Tritium Managing Director David Finn says the charger will be the most appealing offering available to businesses “that want to get involved with electric vehicles, but think it’s all too hard.

“The Veefil’s tiny space requirements… make it easy to visualize in front of your business and attracting customers,” he says.

Installation is simplified by a super-lightweight design and smart features. It has two plugs to support both CHAdeMO and SAE Combo charging standards, meaning the Veefil will support the vast majority of EVs on the road.

“This dual standard support lowers the risk of ownership should one standard win out over the other, and ensures maximum return on investment for Veefil owners,” Finn says.

Tritium anticipates global sales of the Veefil.
