Irish Vehicle-Sales Tailspin Continues in August
Toyota and Volkswagen were virtually tied for the year-to-date sales lead, but volumes were down 15.4% and 9.8%, respectively, from like-2011.
Car sales in Ireland fell 4.3% in August to 3,098 units as the country’s economic crisis continued to batter the new-vehicle market.
Volkswagen, with the two best-selling models, the Golf (141 units) and Polo (124), led the market for the month with 487 units.
Toyota followed with 388 units, ahead of Hyundai, gaining 28.3% to 263 and passing Ford, falling 16.9% to 261.
The result left Irish year-to-date sales at 74,148 units, a 12.1% drop from year-ago.
Toyota led 8-month sales, despite a 15.4% slide to 9,381 units, just ahead of VW, falling 9.8% to 9,378 and Ford, tumbling 20.4% to 8,021 Fast-rising Hyundai’s year-to-date sales jumped 26.2% to 4,792 units for sixth place.
Light-commercial vehicle sales showed a 1.1% uptick to 712 units, leaving the year-to-date result off 2.5% to 9,317.
VW took over as the CV market leader, with 8-month sales climbing 31.1% to 2,049 units after its August deliveries surged 95.8% to 233 units. VW displaced Ford, which saw August deliveries fall 29.6% to 164 units and its year-to-date result slip 2.9% to 1,981.
