January 2017 U.S. LV Sales Thread: Industry Hit 17.5 Million SAAR

January had 24 selling days this year compared with 24 days in 2016, meaning DSR % change will be the same as straight volume % change for year-over-year comparisons this month.

SUMMARY:
The U.S. automotive industry saw slow start in the new year, with January light-vehicle sales down 1.7% from like-2016.
Deliveries totaled 1.138 million units over 24 selling days, resulting in a 47,408-unit daily sales rate compared with 48,226 in prior-year (also 24 days).
The pull-ahead effect of holiday promotions in December was not as strong as expected. However, the average daily sales rate still dropped 23.8% between the two months.
The resulting seasonally adjusted annual rate is 17.48 million units, well below the 18.3 million in the previous month but greater than the 17.4 million year-ago.
GM grabbed a 17.4% share of the market. Ford came in at 14.8%. Toyota accounted for 12.7%. FCA took 13.4% of sales. Nissan (10.0%) and Honda (9.4%) and came next in line.
UPDATE 2:08 PM ET:
Hyundai came in 4.1% ahead of year-ago, and sister company Kia gained 3.2%.
Daimler posted sales of 27,908 LVs, up 3.5%.
UPDATE 12:35 PM ET:
Honda sold 106,380 LV s in January, up 5.9%.
Subaru gained 6.8% to 43,879 units.
Volkswagen posted 23,510 deliveries, 17.1% higher than same month year-ago.
Audi also recorded a strong improvement, up 11.4%, selling 13,201 units.
Mazda delivered 21,698 vehicles, 10.1% better than last year.
UPDATE 10:37 AM ET:
General Motors delivered 195,523 LVs, a 4.0% drop from year-ago.
Ford's LV sales took a smaller dip, down just 0.4% with 167,371 units.
FCA sold 151,126 LVs, falling 11.2%.
Toyota posted a similar decline, 11.3%, selling 143,048 units.
Nissan recorded a 6.2% improvement over prior-year with 112,319 cars and light trucks.
