SUMMARY (FINAL):
The light-vehicle market failed to meet expectations in June as U.S. automakers under-performed relative to an earlier WardsAuto forecast. (See article).
Instead of reaching an 11-year high of 1.57 million units over the 26 selling days, the industry's daily sales rate (DSR) fell 1.6% from same-month year ago, as automakers delivered less than 1.51 million light vehicles in June. That brought the full first half of 2016 to 8.6 million units, up 1.3% from like-2015.
General Motors lost share from year-ago but remained the No.1 LV seller, delivering 255,210 cars and light trucks compared to Ford's 234,298 LVs. GM accounted for 16.9% of the market, followed by Ford's 15.6% share.
Toyota's 13.2% take was good enough for the No.3 spot, narrowly beating FCA's 13.0% market share. Nissan outsold Honda to claim the No.5 position with 9.4% of LV sales.
The seasonally adjusted annual rate fell to 16.61 million units, the second sub-17-million SAAR of this year.
