Dealers in Canada sold 158,108 new light vehicles in November, a second-best LV sales volume, but a drop of 1.3% compared with last year’s record of 160,222. Canada sales last month marked the first month of a year-over-year loss, breaking a 6-month streak that started in May.
The dip in November LV sales was caused by a 10.6% drop in car sales, totaling 43,532 compared with like-2016’s 48,705. Honda lost monthly sales leadership, at least temporarily, as its car sales volume fell 16.2% from year-ago. Rival Toyota nabbed first place on sales of 6,088 cars, but still a loss of 2.3% on like-2016. Porsche saw the greatest improvement for the third month in a row, soaring 139.7%, thanks to quadrupled 911 sales. Tesla (+105.0%, estimated) and Volvo (+100.0%) also posted triple-digit gains.
Light-truck sales continued to outpace last year with November marking the 13th consecutive month of year-over-year gains with sales totaling 114,576, 2.7% above last-year’s 111,517. General Motors, down 17.0%, lost the No.1 spot to Ford, who was up 1.4%. Volkswagen climbed 113.1% with help from the all-new Atlas.
Last month, GM held the No.1 spot with 23,612 deliveries, despite a 17.2% decline, the worst among all companies. With best-ever November sales for the Edge and F-Series, Ford remained on top for the year, with 285,952 units to GM’s 283,025, although the gap is significantly smaller than it was a year ago when Ford led 281,644 to 249,212. Industry LV sales in the 11 months of the year reached a record 1,910,346 units, 4.8% more than the 1,822,150 sold in like-2016.
