Auto makers say renewed buying interest among consumers, a longer work month and strong CV deliveries all contributed to the gain.

Malaysian new-vehicle sales rose 8.1% year-on-year to 44,013 units in February as the market adjusts to stricter requirements for auto loans.

The Malaysian Automotive Assn. says passenger-car deliveries increased 6.6% to 38,867 units, while commercial-vehicle sales jumped 30.9% to 5,146.

The government news agency Bernama quotes MAA as saying the return of buying interest among consumers, a longer work month and strong performance by the CV segment were the main factors in the growth.

Year-to-date sales of 84,961 units were down 10.7% from 95,168 in like-2011. However, MAA forecasts record full-year deliveries of 615,000, up 2.5% from 600,123 year-ago.

Auto makers expect March sales to grow after production climbed 7.3% to 43,958 units in February, with car output up 4.6% to 39,152 and CV builds improving 35.7% to 4,806.
