With Malaysian consumer sentiment remaining positive, auto sales eked out a small year-on-year gain in August.

The Malaysian Automotive Assn. reports deliveries reached 51,125 units for the month, fractionally up from 51,106 year-ago.

The result raised the year-to-date total to 444,534 units, up 2.7% from 433,025 at the same time last year.

New-car sales eased slightly to 44,898 units from a year ago 45,054, but this was offset by a 2.9% gain in commercial-vehicle deliveries to 6,227.

This pushed the year-to-date car segment up 3.4% to 395,255 units and, despite the August increase, left the CV segment down 3.3% to 49,279.

Production improved 16.6% in August to 43,784 units for an 8-month total up 4.4% to 402,688. Car output jumped 19.0% to 39,847 units for an 8-month total up 6.2% to 369,047. CV builds rose 3.9% in August to 3,937 units but remained down 11.9% year-to-date at 33,641.

The MAA says in a statement it expects volume in September to be higher than in August, citing new-model introductions and the continuation of aggressive promotional campaigns by automakers.

The government’s Bernama news agency quotes Malaysian Automotive Institute CEO Madani Sahari predicting industry sales will reach 570,000 units this year and 700,000 next year.
