Malaysia Car Sales Up 3.9% on Year Despite July Drop

The Malaysian Automotive Assn. credits the higher year-to-date rise in car sales to aggressive sales campaigns.

Malaysian new-vehicle sales dropped 11.9% year-on-year in July to 60,267 units and the Malaysian Automotive Assn. predicts August volume will match that level.

The result raised the year-to-date total to 393,409 units, up 3.0% over like-2013 to 381,919.

July new-car sales fell 12.2% to 53,578 units, while commercial-vehicle deliveries slipped 9.6% to 6,689.

Car sales in the first seven months of the year were up 3.9% to 350,357 units, while CV purchases slid 4.1% to 43,052.

The MAA credits the higher year-to-date result to aggressive sales campaigns.

On the production side, Malaysian plants built 52,309 units in July, down 4.5% year-on-year but leaving the 7-month total up 3.0% to 358,904.

Car production for the month slowed 3.4% to 47,707 units, while the CV build dropped 14.5% to 4,602.

Year-to-date car production climbed 4.9% to 329,200 units, while the CV segment was down 13.7% to 29,704.
