WardsAuto tracks light-vehicle (LV) deliveries throughout sales reporting day. Monthly year-over-year change represents the change in daily sales rate (DSR).  April had 25 selling days this year compared with 24 days in 2016, meaning DSR % change will be lower than straight volume % change for year-over-year comparisons this month.

SUMMARY:  

U.S. automakers delivered 1.51 million light vehicles in May.

A daily sales rate of 60,385 units over 25 days represents a 4.6% decline from like-2016 (24 days). The DSR is 10.7% above the prior month, less than the 3-year average change between the two months of 14%.

The report puts the seasonally adjusted annual rate of sales at 16.58 million units in May, compared with year-ago’s 17.11 million and April’s 16.81 million mark.

GM grabbed a 15.7% share of the market, followed closely by Ford with 15.6%. Toyota finished in the No.3 spot with a 14.5% share. FCA took 12.7% of all sales. Nissan (9.1%) and Hyundai-Kia (7.9%) followed. 

May LV sales brought year-to-date deliveries to 6.94 million units, down 2.0% from same-period 2016.

UPDATE 2:20 PM EST

Hyundai's sales dropped 18.9% on 60,011 units. Kia also took a large dive, down 10.7%, with 58,507 vehicles sold.

 

UPDATE 1:15 PM EST

Subaru recorded a 7.6% gain on year-ago on 56,135 units.

Volkswagen brand upticked just 0.1% to 30,014 sales. Audi showed a 1.6% decline with 19,197 deliveries. Porsche's sales rose 0.8% to 4,805 units.

Mazda plummeted 11.7%, selling just 26,047 vehicles.

 

UPDATE 12:12 PM EST (includes some revised figures as of 1:15 PM EST)

General Motors sold 237,183 light vehicles in May, 5.3% under same-month 2016.

Ford came in a close second, delivering 235,508 LVs, 2.0% behind year-ago.

Toyota's sales totaled 218,248 units, down 4.5%

FCA's deliveries dropped 5.0% compared with prior-year to 191,497 LVs.

Honda sold 148,414 cars and light trucks, 3.1% less than year-ago.

Nissan took the softest dive of the top six automakers, down just 1.1% with 137,471 sales.
