The New Zealand new-vehicle market continued on its record-breaking pace in February with sales up 14.3% year-on-year to 11,785 units.

Car and SUV sales rose 12% to 8,052 units, while commercial-vehicle deliveries jumped 19.6% to 3,733.

The result left the market up 15.3% at 25,601 units two months into the new year.

Motor Industry Assn. CEO David Crawford says the result shows growth in the country’s new vehicle sector is continuing as expected. “Market conditions remain unchanged from 2016, with record net immigration, low cost of debt and a strong economy,” he says.

Toyota again was the country’s best seller in February with 1,738 units for a 15% market share, ahead of Ford (1,324) and GM Holden (1,018).

Toyota also led the car and SUV segment with 991 deliveries, followed by Mazda (755) and Holden (654). The CV segment was led by Toyota with 747 units, Ford with 713 and Holden with 364.

The Ford Ranger remained New Zealand’s best-selling vehicle in February with 664 deliveries, ahead of the Toyota HiLux (533) and Holden Colorado (351).

Year-to-date, the Ranger topped the market with 1,405 units, ahead of the HiLux (979) and Toyota Corolla (941).

Crawford says the SUV segments accounted for 39.5% of February sales, followed by the car segments with 28.5%.
