New Zealand’s new-car sales rose 3.3% in August to 5,959 units, the highest level since 2007 when sales were peaking just before the global financial crisis.

The Motor Industry Assn. says new commercial-vehicle sales for the month were much stronger, climbing 30.5% to 2,216 units for the best result since August 2005.

“The volume of new-vehicle sales appears to be settling back to the levels we saw in 2007 prior to the (financial crisis)” MIA CEO Perry Kerr says in a statement. “This is positive news for the industry, and we are optimistic this will continue for the rest of the year.”

After eight months, New Zealand deliveries were up 18.2% to 66,385 units, with car sales increasing 20% to 50,312 and the CV segment advancing 12.8% to 16,073.

Toyota again dominated the new-car segment with 869 deliveries in August, ahead of Ford (712) and GM Holden (626). Toyota also led the CV segment with 584 units, followed by Ford (346) and Holden (253).
