New Zealand Vehicle Sales Hit 30-Year High in August
Year-to-date sales of new CVs reached an unprecedented level, jumping 21% to 24,200 units. New-car deliveries were up 9.6% to 58,419.
New Zealand’s new-vehicle sales are at their highest levels in 30 years, driven by record deliveries of commercial units.
Motor Industry Assn. data shows August deliveries of new passenger and commercial vehicles rose 8% to 10,189 units for an 8-month total up 13% to 82,619, the best result since August 1984.
MIA CEO David Crawford says deliveries of 3,106 new CVs, up 19% year-on-year, produced the strongest August result since 1981 when the industry group began tallying records for the segment.
Year-to-date sales of new CVs reached an unprecedented level, up 21% to 24,200 units.
“If this trend continues it is possible total commercial vehicle sales for 2014 could exceed a staggering 36,000 units, some 5,000 units above 2013 and 13,000 units above 2012,” Crawford says in a statement.
“The strong New Zealand dollar and healthy economic confidence, combined with competitive pricing, is fueling the strong demand for new vehicles, returning sales to above pre-financial crisis levels.”
New-car deliveries rose 3.7% year-over-year in August to 7,083 units, taking the 8-month total up 9.6% to 58,419.
The Ford Ranger was New Zealand’s top-selling model in the month with 548 units, ahead of the Toyota Corolla (469), Toyota Hilux (413), Holden Commodore (314) and Honda Jazz (Fit) in fifth place (265).
The Ranger regained the lead as the top-selling commercial model year-to-date with 3,842 deliveries, ahead of the Toyota Hilux on 3,739.
Toyota was August’s overall market leader with 1,857 units, ahead of Ford (1,130) and GM Holden (1,110).
SUVs accounted for 30% of all New Zealand vehicle sales last month.
