September 2016 U.S. LV Sales Thread: LV Sales Fall Slightly Behind Year-Ago

WardsAuto tracks light-vehicle (LV) deliveries throughout sales reporting day. Monthly year-over-year change represents the change in daily sales rate (DSR).  September had 25 selling days this year compared with 25 days in 2015, meaning DSR % change will equal straight volume %change for year-over-year comparisons this month.

SUMMARY:

U.S. automakers sold 1.428 million LVs in September, resulting in a 57,113 daily sales rate over 25 days.

Sales volume declined 0.7%  from same-month 2015. Labor Day sales at the beginning of the month plus model-year ’16 sell-off incentives throughout the rest of the month weren't quite enough to keep volume ahead of last year.

The monthly SAAR hit 17.65 million units, down from September 2015's 17.96 million, but well ahead of the 17.20 million recorded over first eight months of this year.

GM grabbed a 17.5% share of the market. Ford came in at 13.9%, followed closely by Toyota at 13.8%. FCA took 13.4% of sales. Honda (9.4%) and Nissan (9.0%) came next in line. 

Year-to-date the industry total hit 13.04 million units, a small improvement of 0.4% from like-2015.

 

UPDATE 1:30 PM ET:

BMW came in 5.2% below last year on 29,413 units. Year-to-date, the automaker is down 8.8%.

Kia delivered 49,220 units, declining 1.2%. The 9-month total of 491,764 was a 3.3% improvement on like-2015.

UPDATE 12:52 PM ET:

General Motors delivered 249,779 LVs last month, down 0.6% from September 2015. The January-September tally came to 2.21 million, 3.8% below prior-year.

UPDATE 11:42 AM ET:

Subaru delivered 54,918 LVs, up 3.5%. Over the first three quarters of the year, sales reached 446,887 units, 4.2% above year-ago.

Volkswagen undersold same-month 2015 by 7.8% with 24,112 units in September. YTD, the automaker was down 12.5%

UPDATE 10:54 AM ET:

FCA surpassed expectations with 191,210 LVs sold in September. The automaker has delivered 1.70 million LVs this year, 3.6% better than same-period 2015.

UPDATE 10:41 AM ET:

Ford delivered 199,499 light vehicles in July, slipping 7.9% from year-ago. Ford's YTD sales are at 1.94 million units, up just 0.4%.

Toyota came in slight behind Ford with 197,260 deliveries,  up 1.5%  compared with same-month year-ago. Sales since January, 1.82 million units, were down 2.4%.

Honda sold 133,655 LVs last month, 0.1% fewer than year-ago. The 9-month total hit 1.23 million, 3.3% above like-2015.

UPDATE 9:43 AM ET:

Nissan sold 127,727 vehicles, up 4.9% from year-ago. Year-to-date, the automaker is 5.4% ahead of like-2015.
